Messy Clay!

Image
Good afternoon, Oak Room Family!  Today was the big anticipated day where we broke out the messy clay!  There are so many benefits to working with clay including, gross and fine motor development skills, it is always a center for discussion which builds vocabulary and social interaction skills, the sensory work with clay is very regulating for many students, a new material to create with, it is so much fun, and so much more!  As we continue into this school year we will be learning different techniques for working with clay and utilize different tools but for today we were just getting used to the feel of the clay.  Clay is such an open ended material for the children to work with!  Have a wonderful weekend! Happy Friday!

Imagination!

Good afternoon, Oak Room Family! Children are creating such rich imaginative play in the classroom and had some very detailed involved discussions about space, the sun, the moon, the sky, planets, asteroids, rockets, etc. and the children excitedly shared their ideas and thoughts about space. One of the teachers (cough Lena cough) may have been having a fun day of play and discussions with students and forgotten to take pictures for the blog. We played at the top of the forest too!  “I made the sun!” “It’s my sister and me!” “We made a chicken coop!” Have a fantastic day!

The Language of Paint

Image
Good afternoon, Oak Room Family!  The first few weeks of school we build and practice routines, get to know each other, start friendships that will grow during the year.  The Oak Room students are doing great with all of that and we are starting to work with more complex materials now.  In Reggio inspired schools such as ours we acknowledge that children express themselves and make meaning of their world through a variety of languages, just just spoken and written language.  One of those languages is that of paint.  Today we started using this language in the room and the children really enjoyed working with it and explaining what they made.  We look forward to a lot more painting in the Oak Room as well as many more of the "100 Languages" of children. Have a beautiful day!
