How Can We Make The Castle Taller?

Good Afternoon, Oak Room Family! Small Capers is always one of our favorite days in Oak Room.  We had a wonderful morning making and using a variety of sensory materials, using Ms. Stephanie as a train engine in the gym, climbing, doing puzzles, creating art with several different materials, playing outside and engaging with many different invitations across several classes.

One invitation included different sized cups which seemed to egg the children on to build taller and taller.  The children would build as high as they could reach but the cups called to them to build higher.  The children studied their building, they circled the table, they spun their wheels and discussed the problem with each other.  One solution involved a taller student placing additional cups on top but the building was still not sufficiently tall.  The table was circled by the eager children again and a lightbulb went off.  One of the children slowly and carefully climbed onto the table to grow the building to maximum height.  The solution was satisfactory to the children and the castle grew to new heights until its ultimate collapse.

EF: "We're making a castle!"

GNF: "We're making it bigger!"

GNF: "We still have cups, what do we do with these cups?"
EF: "How about we make it longer?"
GNF: "We'll make a taller tower!"

EF: "GP, do you want to help me? We're making a castle."
GP: "We can make a pyramid."
GP: "I can put it up there because I'm taller"

GP: "I'm going to try to knock that one down."

EF: "I want to make it longer"
NP: "Let's make it all around the table!"

EF: "We should use the little cups and put it on the tippy top and that will be the best part!"

All: "Ahhhhhhhhhh!"

The Aftermath

"Choo Choo!"

Have a great day!
