Beekeeper Visit!
Good afternoon, Oak Room Family! We had a fantastic morning learning about bees today! The children have been very interested in bees and other animals around us this year and you may recall that the children built a playground for bees earlier in the year. We were fortunate enough to have real live beekeepers, Ms. Allison and Mr. Steven to visit our class and bring all kinds of amazing tools and artifacts for the children to see, touch, smell, taste and ask about. The children asked if there were going to be live bees and although we didn't have any live bees in the classroom we did get to observe some dead bees! Children asked and learned about queen bees why bees make honey, why bees like honey. Children got to see, touch and smell parts of a real beehive that was new and that was used by bees. Our beekeepers showed us which parts of the beescreens Queen bees had laid eggs in and then added all kinds of things for the baby bees through tiny holes including honey, pollen and nectar. We learned about bees making wax and we even learned that bees can make a special glue called propolis to seal up cracks in the hive! We got to see different jars of honey that were light and dark and learned that the light honey was made by bees in the spring and the dark honey was made by bees in the fall. Then we got to sample honey from the bees! Ms. Allison and Mr. Steven explained so many more things about the bees and the children had so many questions. It was such a fantastic experience for everyone. A great big thanks to our wonderful local bee keepers! This was such an amazing treat for a class of students who are interested in our bee friends!
Have a bee-utiful weekend!
