The Library is Open!
Good afternoon, Oak Room Family! We have a lot more work to do to build up our Oak Room Library but now that the children have made their library cards they can check out books! Children are still discussing the best way to store and organize books and thinking of additional kinds of books that they want to add to the library and these processes will continue for some time. So far the children have decided that we should organize different types of books into different boxes so today we painted some of our library boxes in order to start that process. They also suggesting making labels for the boxes so that will be a task we can start after we decide on what the categories will be. We have most of the shoe boxes that we need for this project but if we had 3 more it would be perfect. The library is for FUN and to encourage a variety of literacy skills, sorting skills, work with systems, encourage responsibility, work together, etc. Library books ARE NOT HOMEWORK and checking books out of the library is OPTIONAL. The kids are very excited about the library and excited to use it. These books are printed by the teachers based on children's selections. If the books get lost or damaged that is OK. This is meant for fun and not to create extra stress or responsibilities for parents. Children have a process at school for checking out books and they are allowed to bring their borrowed books home. The library rules are that you return the books you borrow to school and take care of the books but we are 100% aware that some books will be lost and damaged because we are a preschool. That is OK, we expect some of that to happen so please do not stress about the books. We would rather the children have fun reading books, playing with them with siblings or parents and enjoying books than to keep the books pristine. A love of books follows children throughout their life in a positive way.
Happy Reading!
