Life Cycle of a Mealworm

Image
Good afternoon, Oak Room Family!  The children continue to observe, interact with and study our mealworm friends.  Since we have watched mealworms transform into pupae and now a pupa into a darkling beetle the children have taken additional interest in the mealworm books that our class is borrowing.  We have discussed the stages of the mealworm life cycle and even though we are sometimes mixed up on the order of the stages they are all interesting.  Yesterday the children discussed a plan after reading a mealworm book to draw the life cycle of a mealworm with markers today using a picture reference and it was very interesting to see that as the children drew their diagrams they began including different elements of habitats that we have been discussing in the classroom.  It is always exciting to watch the different ways that children process new concepts and ideas and weave them together.   GI: "This is the grown up beetle and this is the mealworm and ...

Bigger and Smaller

Good afternoon, Oak Room Family!  Children were working with plastilina clay this morning and as they were making snakes and eventually mealworms they were noticing the sizes, which was bigger, smaller, longer, shorter and started comparing multiples.  It was a fun example of children using clay to practice math concepts.  Teachers noticed this comparing and got out some blocks so that children could make even more size comparisons and ordering.   Have a magnificent weekend!

Double Birthday Bash!

Good afternoon, Oak Room Family!  We celebrated not one but TWO birthdays today in the Oak Room!  The two birthday-ees worked together to plan the celebration.  We had a fabulous pajama day complete with dance party and movie with popcorn!  Earlier in the morning children worked collaboratively with clay to create a home for some pretend mealworms.  Unfortunately their teacher cannot write notes as quickly as these children create beautiful ideas but some (not all) of the things the children built for the mealworms included: food, a slide, a swing, a little thing that they can sleep in, a tiny doll, a house with a roof, walls, floor and bench, a crib with a little hole for them so they can get in, something really cool, a couch, mealworms and baby mealworms, a lawn mower, a car, a slide, a few pools, furniture, chair, playground with tunnels, rocket ship, a roast, bananas, dead worms for them to eat, bacon and so much more!  The children were really thinkin...

Good morning, Oak Room Family!  Children enjoyed a variety of activities during small capers today.  In Oak Room we offered invitations with small world rainbow stacking blocks, clay, puzzles, drawing and plus-plus construction.  There were many other invitations offered in other classrooms.  Feel free to check out what children did in Maple, Acorn, and Seedling Rooms as well! afcmaple.blogspot.com afcacorn.blogspot.com afcseedling.blogspot.com Have a wonderful evening!
