Our First Walk
Good afternoon, Oak Room Family! This morning the Oak students discussed with each other how we could be safe on walks and then we went for a short walk in the neighborhood. The children also discussed some of the things they noticed on their walk including seeing "somebody cleaning their door", hearing cicadas, a few children said they saw "a stick with leaves", one student said they saw a skunk and a squirrel, another student saw "a real leaf and it was purple", one student said they saw a classmate fall down. One of the many purposes of going to the forest and going for walks is for the children to develop their observation skills and generate discussions through shared experiences. Sometimes we go out looking for something in particular (shapes, colors, signs of the seasons, plants, animals, etc.) and sometimes, like today, we observe to see what draws the children's attention. The children had ideas for where they wanted to try walking next time.
